Fifty-odd lessons have each fixed one thing. This one assembles the audit lens: the eight ways steam systems waste money, ranked roughly as Indian plants actually suffer them, each with its tell-tale, its typical size, and the lesson that fixes it. Walk your plant against this list once a year and the Academy pays its own tuition.
The eight, in the order audits find them
1 · Failed and bypassed steam traps. The perennial champion. A single failed-open trap can blow tens of kilograms an hour of live steam into the return or the drain; surveys of unmanaged plants routinely find 15–25% of the trap population failed. Tell-tale: continuous plumes at receiver vents, hot return lines from idle equipment. Size: often the single biggest line on the audit. Fix: lesson D5's testing rhythm and the survey habit. 2 · Condensate not returned. Every un-returned kilogram forfeits water, treatment and ~25% of its fuel heat (lesson D6's three values), and drags blowdown up with it (B6). Tell-tale: make-up water meter running hard; drains steaming. Size: the practice plant's 60%→85% return case was worth lakhs a year. 3 · Flash steam vented. The plume everyone photographs: 465 kg/h ≈ ₹20 lakh/yr at the practice plant (A8/D7). Fix: flash recovery to a matched consumer (D7) or recompression (F4/F5). 4 · Boiler efficiency drift. Excess air, fouled surfaces, poor fuel moisture — three to eight points of efficiency quietly gone (B4). Tell-tale: stack temperature and O₂ readings versus the commissioning record. Fix: B4's indirect method, O₂ trim, and B2's fuel discipline. 5 · Uninsulated surfaces. The flange tax: every bare valve is one to two metres of bare pipe (C7). Tell-tale: an IR gun and one afternoon. Fix: jackets and the reinstatement rule. 6 · Steam leaks. Visible, audible, and priced by hole size in lesson C9's table — a 3 mm hole at practice-plant pressure is roughly ₹1.75 lakh/yr. Fix: the survey-and-tag round, C9. 7 · Pressure and superheat mismatches. Duties fed hotter or higher-pressure steam than they need waste ΔT that cost fuel to make (A6's rule; C3/D4's hardware), and deep-cut stations without desuperheating under-deliver heat transfer (A7/A11). Tell-tale: PRS set-points nobody can justify. Fix: the E6 carrier and pressure review. 8 · Oversizing and idling. Boilers cycling at 30% load (B3/B4), pumps throttled to a third (E2's cube law), whole branches pressurised for one small duty on Sunday. Tell-tale: the load charts of B9 and D9. Fix: right-sizing, accumulators, isolation discipline.
Using the lens
Three habits turn the list into money. Rank before fixing: spend the survey week sizing all eight before spending a rupee on any one — plants that fix in discovery order instead of size order burn their budget on №5 while №1 runs on. Attack pairs: the wastes interlock — returning condensate (2) shrinks blowdown (part of 4) and feeds the flash case (3); trap repairs (1) dry the steam and improve every exchanger (7). The audit that models these couplings finds paybacks the single-issue vendor quote never shows. Re-walk annually: wastes regrow — traps fail at a few percent a year, insulation walks away with maintenance, set-points drift. Lesson F3 turns this lens into a formal method with instruments and a report; lesson F8 makes the savings claims survive scrutiny.
- Print the eight as one page. Walk the plant with it and a ₹3,000 IR thermometer. Tag, photograph, list — do not fix anything yet.
- Size each finding with its lesson's arithmetic (C9 for leaks, A8 for flash, C7 for surfaces, D6 for return). One afternoon of sums ranks the year's work.
- Give every waste an owner and a re-check date. Audits without owners are photography.
- Keep the first walk's list forever — it is the baseline lesson F8 will ask for.

- The condensate side (1–3) usually holds the biggest money; the boiler house (4) the quietest.

The energy audit as a discipline is younger than it feels: it was the 1973 oil shock that turned fuel from a cost line into a boardroom emergency, spawning the world's energy-manager profession, and India's Energy Conservation Act (2001) and BEE made designated industries formalise the walk this lesson describes. The eight wastes themselves, though, appear almost unchanged in fuel-economy handbooks from the 1920s — the plants changed, the prices changed, and the same eight leaks kept their jobs.
