"Is our steam consumption normal?" is the most natural question in this faculty and the most dangerous to answer casually. Benchmarks exist, they are useful, and they are routinely abused. This lesson gives the working numbers — specific steam consumption (SSC) bands by industry — together with the health warnings that make them tools instead of traps, and the method for building the only benchmark that finally matters: your own.

SSC: the comparison currency

Specific steam consumption is steam per unit of product — tonnes of steam per tonne of paper, per 1,000 litres of milk processed, per cubic metre of plywood pressed. It is lesson F8's normalisation applied as a yardstick: dividing by production removes the volume noise and lets a plant compare against its sector, its sister unit, and — most usefully — its own last year. The practice plant's version: at 6 TPH nameplate, ~5,000 kg/h typical steaming and its food-processing throughput, its SSC is one number the morning report can carry daily (D8's department meters make it live).

The three health warnings

Boundaries differ. One mill's SSC includes the power-house steam; its neighbour's counts process only. One dairy counts raw intake; another, packed output. Before comparing two numbers, compare their boundaries (F8's rule wearing its benchmark hat) — most shocking gaps between "identical" plants dissolve right here. Product mix rules. A dairy making powder lives at a different SSC planet from one packing liquid milk; a paper mill's furnish decides its dryer load. Benchmark against your own mix, or segment the number by product line (D8's department meters again). A good SSC can hide bad practice. A plant with cheap husk and a generous boiler can post a mid-band SSC while venting flash and running failed traps — the band says "normal", the F2 walk says "leaking". Benchmarks rank questions, not plants.

Building the benchmark that matters

The sequence: meter the steam (D8) · divide by production monthly · plot it beside the F8 regression · mark project milestones on the chart · review it in the morning meeting the way production numbers are reviewed. Within a year the plant owns a benchmark no published band can match — its own, at its own mix, on its own meters — and the sector table above returns to its proper job: telling a new engineer, on day one, roughly what world they have walked into.   • Compute last year's SSC today from the fuel ledger and production records — one spreadsheet hour, instant orientation against the table.
  • Before quoting any benchmark at a meeting, state its boundary in the same breath. It is the difference between analysis and gossip.
  • Segment SSC by product line as soon as D8's meters allow; blended numbers hide both heroes and leaks.
  • Put the SSC trend on the same page as the production report. What management reads monthly, improves.

Steam stories

Sugar is Indian industry's oldest benchmark culture: "steam percent cane" has been argued across factory fences for a century, driven by a structural quirk — bagasse is the mill's own fuel, so every kilogram of steam saved is bagasse saleable or power exportable, and the benchmark translates straight to revenue. Mills chased each other from 55% toward 35% over the decades through exactly this faculty's methods: evaporator integration, condensate discipline, vapour bleeding. When a sector puts money directly on its benchmark, the benchmark moves — the argument, in one industry, for making SSC a boardroom number everywhere.
